How the work is done in metal

Workshop and site: short runs, plenty of tooling and plenty of machines with stored energy. The risk changes with every part and every clamping.

The jobs that set the pace

  • Machining and fitting
  • Welding and thermal cutting
  • Boilermaking and assembly
  • Load handling with the overhead crane
  • Surface treatments

The bays it comes with as standard

  • Cutting bay
  • Welding bay
  • Machining
  • Heat treatment
  • Shot blasting and painting
  • Steel profile warehouse
  • Dispatch
  • Tool and die shop

Lockout/tagout, with isolation point and verification

The dashboard does not ask “what energies does your equipment have?”: in the metal profile they are already there, each one with where it is isolated and how you check that it is isolated. It is what an inspection asks to see in writing.

The high-risk procedures, written down

Five procedures specific to metal, written in the vocabulary of the sector and available inside the dashboard so you can adapt them to your plant.

Machine tool lockout

Presses and shears store energy in flywheels and accumulators: stopped is not zero.

Hot work

Welding and angle grinding outside a designated area, with a permit and a fire watch.

Lifting and slinging of loads

Lifting plan with the overhead crane: slings inspected, area cordoned off and nobody under the load.

Industrial radiography

Control of exposures: area cordoned off, signage and nobody inside the perimeter.

Die and press lockout

Mechanical chocking is mandatory as well as electrical isolation: gravity does not lock itself out.

Equipment and reference regulations

Equipment typical of this profile

  • Hydraulic press
  • CNC machining centre
  • Welding robot
  • Overhead crane
  • Guillotine shear
  • Press brake
  • Treatment furnace
  • Paint booth
  • Screw compressor

Regulations that frame the work

  • RD 1215/1997 · work equipment
  • RD 656/2017 · gas storage
  • UNE-EN ISO 12100 · safety of machinery
  • RD 486/1997 · workplaces
  • RD 1644/2008 · placing machinery on the market

Current references the dashboard uses to organise the documentation. IndustriaKit is a documentation tool: it does not replace the risk assessment or legal advice.

Documentation specific to the sector
  • EC declaration of conformity for the machine
  • Welder qualification (UNE-EN ISO 9606)
  • Overhead crane certificate

What the dashboard does with all this

Contractors and coordination of activities

Contractors working on site join free, upload their documentation and the traffic light decides who can work. RD 171/2004 coordination with minutes and signature.

Permits with QR codes

Work permit with a printable notice: in the field it is scanned and signed from a phone. LOTO warning when the job calls for it.

Maintenance and OEE

Queue prioritised by criticality, statutory maintenance schedules with their date, counters based on real usage and an OEE panel per line with a Pareto of stoppages.

Personnel and training

Fitness for work, training and health surveillance by job role, with the medical data kept outside the dashboard by design.
